Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology NHS Foundation Trust
Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology is one of the largest specialist cancer centres in the UK, with nearly 7,000 new patients registered each year. Based in Wirral, it serves a population of 2.3 million across Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, the Isle of Man and South Lancashire. It deliver treatments to their patients through radiotherapy and chemotherapy services. The centre also has a sophisticated diagnostic imaging department and is one of only two sites to host the region’s PET:CT scanner (mobile unit).
As one of the largest radiotherapy departments the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology delivers nearly 85,000 radiotherapy treatments a year. It also annually delivers 29,000 outpatient chemotherapy treatments and 2,000 admitted chemotherapy stays and hosts the region's Teenage and Young Adult Unit with the help of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
In addition to the chemotherapy services available at the Wirral based site, the Centre also delivers chemotherapy treatments at 11 weekly clinics in seven locations across the region. The nurse-led clinics are held in district hospitals. During 2008/09 staff from Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology have delivered just under 29,000 outpatient chemotherapy treatments. Of these 56% were delivered at off-site clinics - making this one of the most comprehensive networks of chemotherapy clinics in the UK.
