Doctors and General Practice
Your local Doctor or General Practitioner (GP) is your first point of call if you develop a health problem that needs medical attention. GPs provide a range of services by appointment, including:
- General health and medical advice
- Examinations
- Prescriptions find out if you are eligible for free prescriptions
- Tests such as blood tests and cervical smears
- Vaccinations
- Contraception and maternity services
- Referral to specialists or hospital where appropriate
Many GPs now offer appointments early in the morning or after 5pm, and some at weekends. Contact your local GP for details of extended opening hours.
Registering with a Doctor
You can search for GP practices in Liverpool that are accepting new patients. Simply click on the name of the practice you would like to register with and follow the ‘how to register’ links. You will need to print out and fill in a quick and easy form which you can then drop off at the practice you would like to register with. You can also telephone or visit the practice you would like to register with to request a form. You can also change your GP at any time.
When your Doctors is closed
A GP is available when your local surgery is closed during evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays. If you need urgent healthcare which cannot wait until the next working day, you can access a GP via the GP Out of Hours service. Call your Doctor's surgery on the usual number and you will either be transferred to the Out of Hours service, or there will be an answer phone message with details of how to access it.
The out of hours service operator will take details of your call and pass these to a doctor or nurse, who will contact you and, depending on your circumstances, will offer you one of the following options:
- Telephone advice
- An appointment at a healthcare service in your area that evening
- A home visit
Alternatively, when your GP is closed or it is not possible to get an appointment, you can also access the Mersey View GP-led Walk In Service which is open between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week including Bank Holidays.
The centre aims for you to see a doctor within 20 minutes from booking in at the reception area. Reception staff will need to take some general information from you upon your arrival at the centre.
Following your visit, all your notes will be sent to your GP practice within 24 hours.
