You are invited to join a free programme that will improve your health and mental fitness, increase your energy levels and help make you feel better about life. This is the service that was formerly known as Active Ageing, and is now called Liveability. Further details of the rebranding procedure are available by clicking on this link
The service has its own gym, based at the Sunflower Centre, Woolton. The gym is supplied with ‘Easy Line’ gym equipment, which has been provided by Liverpool City Council Leisure Services. The equipment is non-computerised, which is less threatening to older people and it is also easier on their joints as there are no weights involved. The machines reproduce pushing and pulling movements of both the upper and lower limbs.
There are eight pieces of Easy Line Gym equipment in total. Each piece of equipment is designed to mimic actions from everyday living to help improve fitness co-ordination and balance in older people .For example the shoulder press exercise simulates the action such as washing your hair and reaching into high cupboards.
A qualified gym instructor conducts each gym session, along with help of volunteer gym trainers. Participants are monitored closely to ensure correct use of the equipment is being performed. Any one who is interested in joining the gym will firstly attend a Gym Induction, where they will be asked about health history. Blood pressure and BMI will also be taken, as this will be monitored over 6-8 weeks and recorded on a personal performance programme card. Then they will be shown how to use the equipment correctly and safely.
As well as the gym sessions, the centre runs informal and non-pressurised exercise classes such as Tai Chi, Line Dancing and Yoga, Ballroom Dancing Classes, Chair Based Exercises and even Pottery Classes all taking place at the Sunflower Centre.
All classes are designed to be as fun and interesting as possible for the participants.
All activity sessions cost £2 and a £15 per month membership can be bought if attending the gym more then 3 times a week.
